Pearl Harbor
WHEN: December 7, 1941.
WHAT: Hundreds of Japanese fighter jets attacked Pearl Harbor destroying 20 American naval vessels, which include 8 huge battleships, and they destroyed 200 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans lost their lives that day, and an estimated 1,000 wounded.
WHERE: An American base at Pearl Harbor close to Honolulu, Hawaii.
WHO: Japanese
WHY: U.S. set an embargo on Japan disallowing them to get oil which would cripple their army and render their navy and air force useless. We set the embargo on them to stop them expanding more into Indochina. Prior to December 1941, Japan was trying to accomplish two tasks, release the embargo without moving from Indochina, and prepare for war. After General Tojo Hideki became Japan’s premier. The Japanese military was asked to make a war plan. The plan was to sweep into Burma, the East Indies, Malaya, and the Philippines, they would also set up a defense in central and southwest Pacific. The Japanese knew they would declare war on them, but did not think they were going to be in through the long run to win, and they were mostly concerned about the base in Pearl Harbor and that it could ruin their plans. So December 7, 1941 was when they were going to attack Pearl Harbor.
